Know Your Rights

You have a right to shelter

No one can turn you away. The city must give you a place to sleep. This is the law.

Code Blue means open doors

When it's 32°F or colder, every shelter must let you in. No ID. No questions. No exceptions.

Your building must have heat

Day: at least 68°F. Night: at least 62°F.

No heat? Call 311. Your landlord can be fined. Take photos.

They cannot shut off your heat

Gas and electric companies cannot cut your service if it leaves you without heat. November through April.

You can say no

You do not have to go to a shelter. No one can force you. The only exception is a mental health emergency under strict legal rules.
